Goethe und Schiller Monument
The impressive bronze Goethe und Schiller Monument overlooks the city of Syracuse from its black marble pedestal at the northern end of Syracuse’s Schiller Park. Dedicated on October 15, 1911, the monument was presented by the German citizens of Syracuse to honor Johann von Goethe and Friedrich von Schiller, two prominent and much-admired eighteenth-century German writers.
The bronze statue was cast in Germany and is mounted on a granite base. The figure of Schiller stands 11 feet high, and Goethe 10 feet 10 inches. The statue is one of only four in the United States. The others are located in San Francisco, Cleveland, and Milwaukee.
The German-American Society of Central New York adopted the project of restoring the monument in 2003. The monument itself was cleaned and enclosed in a metal fence, and the area around the monument was landscaped. Around the base of the monument inside the fence are memorial bricks purchased by supporters of the restoration project.
Memorial Bricks
Memorial bricks are available, etched with your name or message, to fund the ongoing task of maintaining the monument and surrounding park area. The bricks have a 3-line limit of 14 characters (including spaces and punctuation).
